Stuart Hall: Representation Theory (EXTRA)

This is a description of Stuart Hall's representation theory.

Representation is how something (an event) and/or someone (people/groups), basically anything, are shown and presented to the audience. Aspects of society, such as gender, age, or ethnicity, are given meaning through the represention from media. On the other hand, according to the dictionary representation means the description or portrayal of someone or something in a particular way or as being of a certain nature.

For example, foreigners in Indonesia are represented as either stupid; reckless; trouble-makers, or wealthy/rich; adventurous; down to earth people. Both are true, however it depends on which reality the media will represent and how will it be potrayed to the audience that creates the stereotype (towards the foreigner). For instance, in the media: detik.com, foreigners tend to be represented positively: donating money to the locals, trying out local/tradisional activities, and ect. In contrast, sindonews.com potrays them negatively by representing events such as, foreigner fought with locals, trespassing holy places/temples, and other obstructive events.

MAGAZINES: TARGETING AUDIENCES THROUGH DEMOGRAPHICS AND PSYCHOGRAPHICS

This is an analysis of two front covers of a different magazine establishment. I worked in a group of four and assisted in analyzing and providing the magazine covers. My friend has digitalized the notes.

Reflection:
I struggled during the analysis process, as I lacked terminologies (regarding magazines) that I could use. I could recognize the feature but didn't remember the name of it. I've got to relearn and revise the theories and terms to help my understanding of such analysis. In the making of this blog post, I implemented the technical skills I learned, such as embedding a PDF and modifying the images, as seen below. Check out my blog post titled 'TECHNICAL SKILL (ONLINE)' for further reference.

Magazine (Front, Content, Doublepage) + Typeface: Research and Development

I will put all of my ideas for my magazine cover in this post, including the masthead, cover lines, and possible layouts/images. I will also reflect on my decisions as they evolve and show all the steps I took that work and do not.

Reflection:
This was a fun process, designing and self-discussion on various ideas that's full of potential to be something great is something I would personally do again but as of right now I'm writing this feeling tired after finishing half of this blog post (I stopped at the layout ideas), because I am currently doing my projects late at night, around 8 at night which tiring after a long day of activities. This again reminded me of time management and consistency, I have to manage my time better so that I could have time to sleep earlier and a time to fully enjoy dinner. As for now, I will be continuing this blog post on another day (tommorow of course).

After looking at the possible names twice I realized that GPT had given an idea similar to what I came up with, which is 'Culinary Canvas', the word culinary is more profound than the word cooking. Thus it makes me wonder if it is better to change the word cooking to culinary, but on second thought, my main target audience is young individuals, therefore the word cooking is best suited to propose a more friendly tone while also keeping it professional so that it reaches the older audiences, such as adults (parents).

Possible Coverlines:
  • Flavors Fusion: Culinary Creativity Unleashed
  • Best In Indonesia!
  • Masterchef's Masterclass
  • Your Cooking Guide Book!
  • Be The Artist of Cooking
  • All You Can Eat - All You Can Make
  • Young And Old All For You
  • No Age In Cooking
  • Cook For Your Parents!
  • From West To East
  • Burgers To Fried Rice
  • Burgers To Nasi Goreng!
I like the phrase "From West to East" because it shows the diversity of how my magazine will be, I would also be having the attention and reach of people all the way from the West to the East. Another way of implying that is by using the names of the meals that are traditionally part of the country or part of that world, like the coverline "Burgers to Nasi Goreng!" which implies the same thing as the earlier coverline (West to East) but better, that's in my opinion. Masterchef's Masterclass is an alliteration which I like as it sounds nice to read for the audience probably.

Layout Ideas:

Seasoning the meal; the face is half hidden; eyes wide open.

Raw designs for the magazine cover

I used a layout my teacher provided and modified it with my own style. I was following the sketches that I made on the paper, so basically, I converted it digitally.

Here are a few resources I found while researching about the genre of my magazine, culinary magazine. I specifically need to know about what Content Pages look like, to achieve an overall idea for my own culinary magazine then.

I found this really professional-looking magazine:

Analysis:
In this culinary magazine, 15 topics are included in 36 pages

Here's my try at designing my magazine content page

DOUBLE PAGE DEVELOPMENT
Here is some research I conducted to develop my contents page.

Statement Of Intent

This is my statement of intent for the magazine I will be producing for comp 1

Reflection:
Grammar mistake in the very last part of my statement of intent but it should still make sense and is understandable. I actually enjoyed writing my statement of intent, at first I was too lazy and tired to do it just by looking at I thought, "Oh this is gonna be a long one" It was but it was enjoyable, almost therapeutic actually. I think I did well and wrote a decent amount of information that will surely be of great help later on.

Reflection:
Writing my statement of intent for Comp 1's magazine project highlighted the importance of clarity. It helped me stay focused and ensure my magazine stays true to its genre. Whenever I considered straying, consulting my statement of intent kept me on track. It's become my project's roadmap, providing clear direction throughout.

Magazine Research

Here you have my magazine research for Component 1's project.

For my comp 1 project, I will be analyzing 2 magazine covers in full detail and 4 magazines that include the cover, contents, and double page in less detail.

RELATED LINK:
Here is a link to my Double Pageb Spread research + development ---> Double Page Spread: Research and Development

Reflection:
At first, I enjoyed creating this magazine research project, and I was the first to finish among all my classmates, but then it turns out I had to research another two magazine covers in detail this time, plus an additional less detailed research of 4 magazines that includes the cover, contents, and double page. I quickly went on to try to finish my first research on a magazine cover in full detail, I had some struggles with what should be included in my research but I managed my way through it by examining my teacher's research example and comparing it side by side to mine. I started to slack off and didn't continue the research for weeks and started to dread thinking about doing it. Today I finished the magazine research before the due date, for your information, this week is the last week.

It is very hard for me to come up with different ideas and connotations from little features that can be found in the magazine. I just follow the conventional way of answering or writing this type of analysis which is easier than writing up something new from scratch in your mind. I will just burnt out, especially with exams right around the corner.

The most valuable spot on the shelf is at eye level, therefore magazines compete with each other for it, because eye-level spots are what gain the highest audience attraction. In order for these magazines to be placed on the eye-level spots publishing companies pay lots of money to obtain such placement as it serves as a great advantage. Given that there are often numerous similar titles within a single sub-genre, a magazine's front cover becomes its primary tool to stand out among the competition. This becomes harder for the publishing companies due to how magazines are arranged on shelves, where they tend to overlap, leaving only the upper third visible to the audience or people passing the aisle. As a result, I will be researching the importance of these areas on my magazine cover and the impact it has on the audience.

Fresh
Woolworths - Featuring Jamie Magazine

Fresh Magazine is a fashion, lifestyle, beauty, and wellness publication based in Canada. Their focus is the healthy, happy, beautiful woman- inside and out. On the other hand, Jamie Magazine is the award-winning food, travel, and lifestyle magazine created exclusively by the UK's number 1 chef and food lover, Jamie Oliver.

Media Language
The usual conventions of a cuisine magazine include the chef they are starring or featuring a dish/food. Fresh magazine conforms to that convention by showing a dish as the main image of the front cover. The picture taken seems to be professionally done in a studio setting, not a candid shot, this creates a higher quality and more polished image that would be appealing to the audience. The picture consists of an image of a single,     specific dish. This may indicate the relevance of the dish with the context of the cuisines in the magazine, foods to cook for spring, or to celebrate spring, as said in the main cover line "Celebrate Spring!". Furthermore, the language used in the cover also supports this, the inclusion of words such as 'seasonal' and 'green' has connotations of it being a season thing and spring, as the color green represents spring. One of the main color palettes of the cover is light/warm green, this can be seen in the text (the typography) of some cover lines, which further fortifies the spring atmosphere.

Representation

The magazine chose a kebab stick ready to go on a green plate as its primary image. The image was an overhead shot to show a clear image of the meal, this also includes the green sauce of the kebab stick on the bottom left. Kebab sticks are normally related to BBQs and parties, which represent celebrations. This choice of meal further emphasizes the message directed by the magazine, 'Celebrate spring!'. Shades of green can be seen all around the front cover, this usage of the color green by the magazine connotes health and/or healthy meals as green is generally associated with vegetables & fruits. If we see the coverlines it says "asparagus" which further fortifies this connotation.

Audience
The target audience can be professional cooks/chefs, home cooks, spring lovers/celebrators, healthy meals and cooking enjoyers, or simply Jamie Oliver's fans/followers. According to the Uses and Gratification Theory, people want to consume this media text for surveillance and knowledge. This audience might be curious about what meals fit spring and/or meals to cook during spring, or solely to find out what Jamie Oliver has to offer this time around with his cuisine magazine. The overhead shot of the kebab makes the components used on the stick to create the kebab noticeable for the audience to clearly see the avocados and other healthy components. This would be noticed and acknowledged by kebab lovers or people who often cook/create kebab sticks. It most likely be hard for people who enjoy kebabs and healthy meals at once.

Industry
This edition with the promotion of Jamie Oliver happens every seasonal celebration, such as spring, Christmas, Halloween, and other celebrations, this creates an intriguing schedule for releases of fresh magazines featuring Jamie Oliver. The timing of the releases is fully intentional as these are the moments when people are generally excited and cheery for celebrations, this would support increased sales as people would need culinary knowledge or references for the celebrations/festivals. The Fresh magazine has a website (woolworth.com.au) -  a-call-to-action- for browsing their items that are for sale and for shipping/buying.

Reflection:
I couldn't find the table of contents for my magazine above, so I've decided to take a picture of the first page of the magazine (a double page). This analysis took a decent amount of time to finish as I had no idea what to include in the points above, this is due to the lack of understanding of what the points meant (Media language, representation, Audience, and Industry).

Fresh
Woolworths + White Wings

Woolworths is a supermarket chain, that specializes in groceries (vegetables, fruit, meat, packaged foods, etc.), but also sells magazines, DVDs, health and beauty products, household products, pet and baby supplies, and stationery. One of their publishing magazine, Fresh Magazine.

White Wings is Australia’s baking expert. For over 125 years we have been trusted to deliver the finest quality products and ingredients to make baking tastier, easier, and more convenient! Launched in 1898, we made Australia’s first self-raising flour and have continued to expand our range of high-quality baking ingredients and baking mixes.

Media Language
A typical culinary magazine often highlights a prominent chef or showcases a specific dish. Fresh magazine conforms to this convention by featuring a delectable dish on its front cover. The photograph appears professionally executed, captured in a studio environment rather than an impromptu (done without plan) setting. This choice creates a higher quality and refined image, enhancing its appeal to the audience. It is a picture of some sort of dessert which is a cake, as seen from the cover (the picture) and the cover lines, "Chocolate & Blackberry Layer Cake". This indicates that the magazine is about cakes, creating/making/baking cakes, and other sorts of desserts and sweets. Furthermore, the language used in the cover also supports this, the inclusion of words such as 'Cake' and 'Chocolate' has connotations of sweets and desserts. The picture of the cake takes almost the whole cover page with no other images/pictures of other meals or foods which emphasizes the context of the magazine- cakes or baking! There are very minimal cover lines, it looks simple and clean, and a very straightforward cover line "Let's eat cake" it tells the readers what to expect.

Representation
Just like other cooking mags, Fresh magazine likes to show off yummy stuff on its cover. This time, they've got a fancy pic of a super delicious chocolate and blackberry layer cake. The photo looks all pro and high-quality because it was taken in a studio. The cake is the star, matching what the magazine is all about - tasty desserts! They didn't bother with showing other food, just desserts, this connotes that it's all about the sweet stuff (food/meals)

Audience
The audience for this magazine could be professional bakers, home dessert enthusiasts, those with a sweet tooth, or simply people who love creating tasty treats. Following the Uses and Gratification Theory, individuals might be drawn to this magazine for dessert ideas and sweet knowledge. They could be curious about what sugary delights are perfect for special occasions or what's trending in the world of desserts. The close-up shot of the delectable cake allows the audience to savor all the delicious details, like layers of chocolate and blackberry goodness. This would catch the eye of dessert lovers or those who enjoy crafting sweet delights in their kitchens. It's also a perfect match for people who have a sweet tooth and appreciate THE ART of dessert making.

Industry
The magazine is free. This magazine can be accessed online. Fresh works hand in hand with White Wings, as White Wings is a firm or a community of bakers and baking experts that mainly focus on Christmas or seasonal holiday-related desserts. The Fresh magazine has a website (woolworth.com.au) -  a-call-to-action- for browsing their items that are for sale and for shipping/buying.

Mini-Analysis

Nirmala
Nirmala
January 2002 Issue

I like how the contents in the table of contents are placed it's very neat. The layout is very organized, however, there are many white spaces, not like it is a problem I think is fine. I also noticed they added an image/item on the front cover, which is a nice touch in my opinion.

I do like the color scheme, it is very warm, and I appreciate that they stayed consistent with the colors. I like how there's one image of the woman doing yoga that stands out from the rest, it is bigger and takes up most of the space, which helps make it look diverse and distinct, making it not look dull and boring.

Fresh

128 Jan/Feb 2017 Issue

I love the layout, it is just so easy and simple to see, I really like it. The colors go well together, very diverse but pleasing to the eyes. The heading of the contents is very soft and saturated, very calming to see. I might incorporate this style into my own magazine later on.

This double-page spread is very nice to look at because it is very minimal with the text and applies more space for the image to be seen. I really like this design because it feels very open and not overwhelming for me to read. I will definitely incorporate this type of design as one of my double-page spreads in my magazine.

Fresh
Woolworths
137 November 2017 Issue

The layout of the contents is nice because it is well organized and it includes images. However, I do not like the color scheme implemented, the dominance of the color green on the left side doesn't go well with the aesthetic of the opposing side. Perhaps it is because of the red heading used for the word "contents", It just doesn't look pleasing for my eyes to look at, as it feels off.

I love the contrast between the red and black colors, it gives such a deluxe look. I also notice and love how the color palette matches the color of the meal (dessert) being presented, alongside the full black plate used, it is such a perfect touch for the aesthetic of this double-page. I would be sure to add such a design for my magazine: The background color matches with the meal/food showcased.

Fresh
Woolworths
138 December 2017 Issue

My first thought of the table of contents is that is pretty crowded but it's no problem. I like the use of colors red and blue for the words, as they relate to the holiday season or Christmas, the image of the kids opening up their presents under a Christmas tree is a very nice touch to keep the design aligned with the theme of the magazine. Other than that, the layout is organized as usual coming from Fresh magazine, they included pictures, images, and different typography. I learned a lot from these magazines.

I like the look of this double-page spread, nothing too crazy but I like how it stayed consistent with the color scheme. Good use of items or images of items like the dark blue stars they spread around the pages, I may follow such feature for my magazine. A balanced amount of text in contrast to the images and pictures. I see no drop cap, it makes the audience not bother to read the text, that's worst-case scenario. Overall, it looks okay nothing crazy.

Weekly Progress & Plan

Here Is My Weekly Progress For The Magazine Project & Rough Plan

Reflection:
I'm really excited about this new project we'll be doing as a class, component 1, all about magazines. I never read a magazine before, books and comics I have but not a magazine, so I'm very curious about the difference. This weekly progress and plan will definitely help me track my component 1 progress and how I develop my work, and keep everything aligned and organized. It'll be fun to look back at what I wrote here and just to reflect on myself, and how I'll go through and hopefully overcome whatever trials component 1 brings, I hope it'll be challenging enough that it's fun and not stressful.

- Continue applying time management techniques to future tasks

Week 3

Tasks:
-Analyzed two front covers in detail
-Discuss Stuart Hall's representation theory
-Started a mini-analysis of a double-page spread
-Took photos of two magazines' covers, contents and double-page
Problem: I had to keep pausing when writing my magazine analysis (Media Language, Representation, Audience, and Industry) due to confusion about what was supposed to be included. However, I'm starting to get a hang of it, especially for analyzing media language and representation.
Solution: I go back and forth from my magazine to my teacher's magazine to compare and get a good grip on understanding what should be written and included.
Reflection:
One quote from Stuart Hall that lingers in my mind is "Reality has no fixed meaning". That statement alone can change one's self, as it gives clarity to the perception of reality and/or life itself like it did mine. This media lesson isn't just about media, making movies, or analyzing magazines, it is something we can apply and utilize in our lives. That's how I see it. Anyway, I made a change in the format of my weekly progress writing due to my teacher's idea for the formatting.

Week 4
- I created a new blog which is my double-page spread research
- I created a new blog for my statement of intent
Problem: I still need to work on and finish a lot of my posts/assignments
Solution: I made a schedule alongside a to-do list for the unfinished assignments/posts
Reflection:
I actually forgot to make the weekly progress & plan for this week (week 4) and had to do it several days after which made it harder for me to write my week 4's progress, as I don't really remember as much but after awhile of thinking and asking my friends I started to get a hint of what I did. I will try to avoid something like this again.

Week 5
- I finished my statement of intent and added a reflection
- I checked my teacher's and friend's posts as references on what I need to do
- I changed the theme of my blogger
ProblemI had little to no idea of what I was supposed to be putting or writing in some of the posts I created for component 1
Solution: I went to my teacher's examples of what is to be included, and also I checked my friend's work as a reference
Reflection:
I should be more focused and well-informed so that I can be less dependent on others. I was pretty much lost this week, perhaps I was losing my drive. I'm going to take a break this week just for a while but I'll be sure to come back and be rejuvenated to make some work.

Week 6
- We continue making our blog post regarding comp 1 (Magazines)
- I started Research and Development of double page spread
- I created a new post, Technical Skills (online), and Terminologies
- I finished the Terminologies post
- I finished and finalized the Double Page Spread: Research and Development
- I started writing an article for my magazine (a draft)
- I did some touch-ups and modifications to the layout for Technical Skills (online)
Problem(?):
I was procrastinating (a bit) again and it actually affected my schedule BIG time. Basically when given an assignment just create the the blog post, layout it neatly (the title, question, etc.), and leave it right there without actually answering the question, delaying it for later, which turns into days.
Solution:
I did everything last minute, in other words, a day before the submission date. I have to rush it, and not be a perfectionist with my work but still give the highest standard possible for it.
Reflection:
The problem of procrastination and delaying what can be done in a day has been a problem not only for me but many other students I know (my friends). I am making good progress in eliminating this bad habit by just doing it, just do it. When I have spare time, I use it to work on assignments that can be done quick or at least make some progress. Like right now, I am writing this reflection in Pure Mathematics class, since I am done with my work I have some time to spare to work on this, instead of daydreaming while listening to music or whatnot.

Week 7
- We were given a checklist of the assignments we were supposed to do and finish
- We answered some Section B questions, and I worked with a partner
- I finalize my weekly progress & plan post
- I worked on my magazine development post
- I finished my magazine research post
- I created the Location Scout blog post for next semester
- I created the blog post for my magazine article (first draft)
Problem:
Class got dismissed and I didn't get the chance to finish today's weekly progress report.
I didn't have a chance to write even a few at and after school (no spare time).
Solution:
I did it in the next lesson on Media Studies.
Reflection:
My examinations are right around the corner, and that corner is the very next week. I feel that time is running out quick and that 24 hours in a day is not enough to include my education and personal life (eating, exercising, sleeping EARLY), one of them has to be sacrificed. I'm planning to sacrifice my sleeping hours this week just for media studies because the due date will be on Friday...SOMETHING UNEXPECTED HAPPENED, my teacher was generous enough to give an expansion and postpone the due date to Monday next week. Now I don't have to sacrifice my sleeping hours for media studies,,, now for Computer Science instead- I can't escape education.
To-Do List:

Magazine Development
+More Layout Ideas
Technical Skills (online)
+Gather evident images
Research Magazine
+1 magazine research
Weekly Progress & Plan
+Add Reflections

Semeter Reflection:
Reflecting on the past weeks, I've found keeping a weekly progress tracker to be surprisingly helpful. It's like having a personal assistant nudging me along, reminding me of what needs to be done and when. Admittedly, coming back from the break made me a bit lax in the time management department, falling into the procrastination trap more often than I'd like. But hey, we've all been there, right? Racing against the clock, fueled by coffee and sheer determination. It wasn't pretty, but I managed to scrape by in the end. Lesson learned: consistency is key. So here's to embracing the monotony of tracking my progress, one week at a time, and hopefully avoiding those caffeine-fueled all-nighters in the future.

Critical Reflection

 This is my self-critical reflection
